The measurement of the lip thickness can now be taken. Apply light pressure to the valve face to ensure that the seating surface is in contact with the gage ring inside diameter edge. It is recommended that the measurement is taken in at least three points.
The valve lip thickness may be measured in various ways when placed in the gage ring. A direct measurement can be taken by using an indicator. Here it is measured using a 369-2607 Digital Indicator with the 5P-4160 Tip on a 5P-4456 base, and 3P-1585 collet. (A 6V-7030 depth micrometer may also be used.)
Illustration 10 g06258835
Place the indicator arrangement on the face of the valve and zero the readout.
Illustration 11 g06258838
Slowly slide the indicator or lift it so the indicator point contacts the surface of the Gage Ring Assembly.
This will show the lip thickness as measured for the gage point that the reusability specifications are determined from.
Illustration 12 g06259212
A 6V-7030 depth micrometer or equivalent can also be used.
An 8H-35-81 Feeler Gage set precision pin, or precision gage block set can also be used as a Go/No-Go gage to determine reusability. Gage pins and gage blocks are readily available worldwide.Arrange the gage set to the minimum acceptable dimension. Place the valve and Gage Ring upside down on a precision surface plate. If the Go/No-Go gage does not fit under the Gage Ring, it is not reusable. If the Go/No-Go Gage does fit under the Gage Ring, then it is acceptable for reuse.

Inspection and Maintenance
Inspection
Inspect all components prior to each use for nicks, burrs, dents, cracks, bends, or worn parts. If damage is found, discontinue use until inspected and released for use by an approved inspector at the dealership.
Have tools inspected annually by an approved dealership inspector. Maintain a written record of all inspections.
Make sure that the locking screw for the bushing is tight and locks the bushing into place.
Illustration 15 g06258864
Make sure that the measuring surface is free of burrs.
Make sure that the measuring surface is free of burrs, scratches, and nicks.
Illustration 16 g06258869
Make sure that Gage ring edge is sharp and free of imperfections.
Make sure that the gage ring edge is sharp and free of imperfectionsIf either surface is found to be unacceptable, remove the bushing and retaining screw, and place the Gage ring on a surface grinder with the gage surface up. It is suggested that only as much material as necessary to bring the surfaces back to original condition should be removed. It may be necessary to treat the measuring surface with black oxide or other rust preventative coating.Service Parts
