Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Put an alignment mark across the planetary case and the carrier for assembly purposes.
Remove the drain plug from the planetary case and drain the oil. The capacity of the case is 0.95 L (0.250 US gal).

Remove two dowels (1) from the planetary case with a hammer and a punch.
Remove bolts (2), the washers, and the nuts that secure the planetary cover. Remove planetary cover (3) .

Remove retaining ring (4) from planetary cover (3) .

Bend lock washer (5) off outer nut (6). Remove the outer nut and the lock washer.

Remove bolts (7) and input shaft cap (8) from the planetary case.

Use a soft faced hammer in order to remove the bearings and input gear (9) as a unit from the planetary case .
Remove inner nut (10), the washer, and planetary drive gear (11) from the pinion shaft.

Remove bearings (12) from input gear (9) .

Remove key (13) from the pinion shaft.
Remove nuts (14) and the washers that secure planetary case (15) to the carrier. Remove the planetary case from the carrier.

Note: Bearing cage (16) and bearing assembly (17) may remain in the planetary case after the case is removed from the carrier.
Remove bearing cage (16) and bearing assembly (17) from the planetary case.
