PROBLEM
Certain Remanufactured cylinder packs for various 3500 engines may have mis-assembled 8N-7296 or 253-1238 Wrist Pin Retaining Rings. The wrist pin retaining rings (retainers) may not have been seated properly and may come out of the ring grooves during assembling, handling, or shipping.
ACTION REQUIRED
1. Inspect the affected cylinder packs in dealer parts stock. Refer to Image 1 to identify the part number of the affected cylinder packs.
2. Inspect the date code on the package label to determine if any of the affected cylinder packs have date codes on or before D31M12Y2008. (On or before 31 December 2008).
- If the date code IS NOT on or before D31M12Y2008, mark the package to indicate the cylinder pack has been inspected according to PI7#### / REBE5276, and return the part to dealer parts stock.
- If the date code IS on or before D31M12Y2008, proceed to the next step.
3. Remove the cylinder pack from the packaging and carefully slide the piston and connecting rod toward the bottom of the cylinder liner. Slide the piston and connecting rod far enough to allow inspection of wrist pin and wrist pin retaining rings.
DO NOT slide the piston far enough to expose the piston rings.
4. Inspect both wrist pin retaining rings to ensure they are properly seated in the groove.
- If both retaining rings are properly seated, reassemble and repackage the cylinder pack, mark the package to indicate the cylinder pack has been inspected according to PI7#### / REBE5276, and return the part to dealer parts stock.
- If a retaining ring is not seated properly, reseat the retaining ring using 1P-1861 Retaining Ring Pliers, reassemble and repackage the cylinder pack, mark the package to indicate the cylinder pack has been inspected according to PI7#### / REBE5276, and return the part to dealer parts stock.
- If a retaining ring is missing, install a new retaining ring (retainer) with 1P-1861 Retaining Ring Pliers, reassemble and repackage the cylinder pack, mark the package to indicate the cylinder pack has been inspected according to PI7#### / REBE5276, and return the part to dealer parts stock. Refer to Image 1 for the correct part number of retaining ring for the cylinder pack.
Refer to RENR9717 for retaining ring installation and removal instructions.
