The start will be automatically disengage after 45 seconds of cranking. Allow the starter to cool for 2 minutes before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the oil gauge display verifies that the oil pressure is sufficient.
Note: Manually check engine oil prior to starting engine. Ensure that oil is in the safe range of the dipstick. For more information, refer to Operation Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil Level - Check" in Maintenance Support Section.
All forward/neutral/reverse switches must be in the NEUTRAL position in order to start the machine. If either switch is not in NEUTRAL position, the machine will not start.
Engage the parking brake.
Fasten the seat belt.
Ensure that the control levers are in the HOLD position.
Before the engine is started, check for the presence of bystanders or maintenance personnel. Ensure that all personnel are clear of the machine. Briefly sound the horn before you start the engine.
Turn the engine start switch to the START position in order to start the engine. Note: Do not depress the accelerator pedal during engine starting.Note: If the starting aid indicator located on the indication display illuminates during cranking, the engine is activating the ether system. Premeasured amounts of ether will automatically be injected. DO NOT attempt to manually inject ether.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts. Note: If the ether system has been activated for starting, the starting aid indicator may remain illuminated after the engine has started. The system will continue to automatically inject ether as needed until the engine speed has stabilized. DO NOT attempt to manually inject ether.Note: For temperatures below −18° C (−0° F), the use of a coolant heater is recommended.Note: For temperatures below −23° C (−10° F), consult your Cat dealer for additional information or refer to Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".Engine Idle Management System
The Engine Idle Management System (EIMS) is designed to help maximize fuel efficiency. EIMS allows flexibility to manage idle speeds. The EIMS engine software comes with two idle control settings: hibernate mode and work mode. Before the first Work Mode after machine starting, the machine will set the idle speed so a transmission oil level check can be completed. The idle speed will be held for 5 minutes with the low idle set to 800 rpm. The following conditions must be met:
The throttle pedal is released
The parking brake is engaged
The transmission is in Neutral
The implements are not active
There are no active diagnostic codesIf any of the above conditions are not met, the transmission oil level check will not occur again until the next power cycle.Note: If there is an active diagnostic code on the machine, the machine may operate at the programmed
