Consult the EMA Lubricating Oils Data Book, SEBU6310, for a listing of oil brands. The percentage of sulfur in the fuel will affect the engine oil recommendations. For fuel sulfur effects, the Infrared Analysis or the ASTM D2896 procedure can be used to evaluate the residual neutralization properties of an engine oil. The sulfur products formation depends on the fuel sulfur content, oil formulation, crankcase blowby, engine operating conditions and ambient temperature.Caterpillar's 20 times rule for TBN (Reference: Oil and Your Engine SEBD0640) versus fuel sulfur is a general requirement, but it can be modified by used oil analysis. The effectiveness of an oil formulation will depend on the additive package. A balanced additive package oil of a lower TBN can be as effective in fuel sulfur neutralization and overall performance as some oils with higher TBN values. Cat Hydraulic Oil (Hydo)
Cat Hydraulic Oil is formulated with a balanced additive system, including detergents, rust inhibitors, antiwear agents and defoamers. It will offer maximum protection against mechanical wear, rusting and corrosive wear in all hydraulic and hydrostatic transmission systems.Cat Hydraulic Oil should be used to achieve maximum life and performance from hydraulic system components and hydrostatic transmissions. Use of Cat Hydraulic Oil is recommended in most hydraulic and hydrostatic systems.If higher viscosities are required because of high ambient temperatures, Cat Engine Oil (EO) and Cat Diesel Engine Oil (DEO) can be used.Commercial Oils
If Cat oils can not be used, the following commercial classifications can be used in the hydraulic and hydrostatic transmissions:* API CF-4/SG, CF-4/SF, CE/SG, CE/SF, CD/SG, or CD/SF* MIL-L-2104E or DIndustrial premium hydraulic oils that have passed the Vickers vane pump test (35VQ25) and/or have a minimum of 0.09% zinc additive may also be used. These oils should have antiwear, antifoam, antirust and antioxidation additives for heavy duty use as stated by the oil supplier. ISO viscosity grade of 46 would normally be selected.Transmission Oil
Cat Transmission/Drive Train Oil (TDTO)(TO-4)
Cat Transmission/Drive Train Oil is balanced to give maximum frictional material life in power shift transmissions and eliminate brake chatter in wet brake applications. This oil has passed the requirements for the new Caterpillar TO-4 oil specification which not only includes the frictional requirements, but also has gear wear requirements. This oil is offered in several viscosity grades, including SAE 50 grade, for maximum component life at high ambient temperatures and heavy duty cycles.Maximum transmission life and performance can be achieved, by using Caterpillar's Transmission/Drive Train Oil (TDTO)(TO-4).
