Connect the components. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Technician (ET)".
Start the WinFlash PC Program.
Ensure that the ignition key switch is ON and ensure that the engine is off.
Select the part number of the engine personality module that needs to be programmed into the ECM. Program the personality module. A new ECM is shipped with a blank personality module.Note: The WinFlash PC Program provides the part number of the selected file for the ECM, the application and the software. Ensure that this file matches the engine before you begin to flash the file into the ECM.
Messages from the personality module and the meaning of the messagesA new ECM comes with a blank personality module. A blank personality module has not been programmed. A blank personality module will prompt you for all three of the following messages. The information that is contained in the ECM Status will be scrambled if the module has not been programmed previously. This is normal.
Message The engine ID in the flash file does not match the engine ID in the ECM.
Meaning The ECM has a personality module for a different engine.
Solution Stop the transfer of files. Access information about the ECM status under the menu for the ECM. Ensure that the file that was being transferred matches the engine application.
Message The application ID in the flash file does not match the application ID in the ECM.
Meaning The ECM has a personality module for a different application. For example, the ECM has a personality module for a 3126B HEUI On-Highway truck engine and you are attempting to program a personality module for a 3508B Marine engine.
Solution Stop the transfer of files. Access information about the ECM status under the menu for the ECM. Ensure that the file that was being transferred is for a personality module for an On-Highway truck.
Message The ID of the ECM in the flash file does not match the ID of the ECM in the ECM.
Meaning The ECM is not for use with an On-Highway truck application.
Solution Stop the transfer of files. Access information about the ECM Status under the menu for the ECM. Ensure that the ECM on the engine is for an On-Highway truck application.Note: The amount of time that is required to flash a personality module is significantly longer than earlier applications. The amount of time that is required to flash a personality module with a 7X-1700 Communication Adapter is approximately ten minutes or more.
