7. Install twenty one bolts (1) and washers that hold the parking brake group housing to the differential housing. Tighten the twenty one bolts and three nuts to a torque of 240 40 N m (175 30 lb ft).End by:a. Install final drive groups.b. Install drive axle shafts.c. Install axle housing group (front or rear).Disassemble & Assemble Parking Brake Groups
The parking brake group contains components under high spring force. Failure to follow procedures may result in personal injury or death.
Start by:a. Remove parking brake group. The parking brake groups used in the front and rear axle housing groups are similar. The disassembly and assembly procedures are the same for both axle groups. 1. Position the parking brake group so parking brake piston (1) and piston retainer (3) are facing up as shown.2. Put alignment marks on the housing, parking brake piston (1) and piston retainer (3).
There is spring force against the parking brake piston and piston retainer. When bolts (2) are removed, the spring force will be released. To prevent possible personal injury, removal of the parking brake piston and piston retainer should be performed in a press in order to retain the piston and retainer.
3. Using a press, compress the parking brake piston springs as shown. Remove fourteen bolts (2) from piston retainer (3). Release the press and spring tension. 4. Use tooling (A) to remove the parking brake piston and the piston retainer. The weight of the parking brake piston and piston retainer is approximately 20 kg (44 lb). 5. Turn the piston and retainer over. Remove two seals (4). Use a soft-faced hammer to remove the retainer from the piston. 6. Remove seal (5) and seal assembly (6) with the back-up ring. 7. Remove fourteen spring assemblies (7) and one seal (8). The following steps are for the assembly of the parking brake group. 8. Install seal (5) and seal assembly (6) with the back-up ring. Put a thin coat of 1P0808 General Purpose Grease on the seals. Seal assembly (6) consists of an L-shaped seal and a back-up ring. Put the L-shaped seal with the flat side downwards. Put the back-up ring in position uppermost. 9. Position the parking brake housing as shown. Install two guide studs (10) 5/16 in - NC 100 mm (4 in) long. 10. Use tooling (A) to position parking brake piston (1) on the parking brake group housing. Align marks and ensure parking brake piston (1) has correctly engaged with three dowels (9). The weight of the parking brake piston is approximately 15 kg (33 lb). 11. Put a thin coat of 1P0808 General Purpose Grease on the seal surface of piston retainer (3). Position retainer (3) over guide bolts and align marks. Carefully lower retainer (3) into the piston seals.12. Install three bolts (11) 5/16 in NC × 75 mm (3 in)with hardened washers, equally spaced in retainer (3). Evenly tighten the bolts (11) to pull the retainer (3) into the piston seals. Add extra washers
