Introduction
These charging cylinders make it possible to accurately measure the exact weight of refrigerant needed to charge an air conditioner according to specifications.Adjustment of a plastic shroud makes compensation for the different volumes the same weight of refrigerant has at different temperatures. An electric heating element on the charging cylinder can be activated if increased pressure is needed to push all of the refrigerant into the air conditioner.Reference: Service Manual SENR3334, entitled, Air Conditioning and HeatingInstallation and Operation Procedure
Safety goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant. Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well ventilated area. Avoid any physical contact with the refrigerant. Contact can cause frost bite. Keep face and hands away to prevent injury.
1. Connect hose (1) between valve (2) on the bottom of the charging cylinder and the valve on tank (3). Position tank (3) with the valve at the lower end of the tank as shown. Open both valves.2. Open valve (4) on top of the charging cylinder to release air from the cylinder, until liquid refrigerant can be seen in the sight glass; then close valve (4) and valve (2).3. Turn plastic shroud (5) to the position where the measurements for the refrigerant that is being used are over the sight glass.3. Open valve (2) and fill the cylinder to the desired refrigerant weight for the air conditioner unit; use the column under the pressure indication that is the same as shown on gauge (6).4. Close valve (2) and the valve on the bottom of tank (3).5. Disconnect hose (1) from tank (3).6. Connect hose (1) to the system that is to be charged. Open valve (2) and charge the system.7. If the full amount of refrigerant will not flow into the system, connect plug (7) into the correct electrical supply.8. For each 15 minutes the cylinder is heated, cylinder pressure will increase 140 to 170 kPa (20 to 25 psi). This will cause the remainder of refrigerant inside the cylinder to flow into the air conditioner.9. When the system is fully charged, close valve (2) and disconnect hose (1) from the system.
