BUSHING 1172181 - Caterpillar

Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an occurrence of a high turbocharger turbine inlet temperature. Also, use this procedure if one of the following engine events is active. Refer to Systems Operation, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about event codes. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Systems Operation, "Engine Monitoring System".

1180-0 Engine Turbocharger 1 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - most severe (3) The temperature at the inlet for the turbocharger turbine has exceeded the trip point and the delay time has expired. The alarm output is activated. The code is logged.
1180-15 Engine Turbocharger 1 Turbine Inlet Temperature : High - least severe (1) The fuel is shut off to the engine . The shutdown output is activated. The code is logged. The engine is shut down. Probable Causes

Incorrect air/fuel ratio

High Inlet Air Temperature
Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to check for a 105-0 Engine Intake Manifold #1 Temperature : High - most severe (3) that is active or logged.If the code is active or logged, refer to Troubleshooting, "Intake Manifold Air Temperature Is High" for information that is related to troubleshooting the condition.Incorrect Air/Fuel Ratio
An air/fuel mixture that is too rich will increase the exhaust temperature. Verify that the exhaust emissions are correct. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Air/Fuel Ratio Control - Adjust".A change in the fuel energy content will change the air/fuel ratio. Obtain a fuel analysis.The fuel supply pressure must be adequate and stable.Incorrect Engine Timing
Verify that the base timing is correct. The base timing is calibrated by the Electronic Control Module (ECM) automatically during each engine startup. For additional information, refer to Troubleshooting, "Speed/Timing" for details.Verify that the engine timing is correct. Ensure that the “First Desired Timing” parameter is correct. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "System Configuration Parameters" for information related to these parameters.Exhaust Restriction
Check the back pressure of the exhaust system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Air Inlet Restriction and Exhaust Restriction - Test".Investigate the cause of the exhaust restriction. Perform adjustments and/or make repairs, as needed.A Buildup of Deposits in the Cylinder or Internal Oil Leaks
Use a borescope to inspect the cylinders. Look for the following conditions:
Deposits on the valve seats
Deposits on the valve faces
Deposits on the cylinder walls that are above the upper limit of the piston stroke
Signs of internal oil leaksOther signs of internal oil leaks include high oil consumption and blue smoke.Note: Excessive deposits contribute to guttering of the valves.If excessive deposits and/or signs of internal oil leaks are found, investigate the cause of the condition. Perform the necessary repairs.
