Adhesive Requirements
I. Surface Preparation
A) Cleanliness - The surfaces to be bonded must be clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, mold release agent and loosely-adhering surface contaminants. Thorough cleaning of both the metal and fiberglass surfaces with a solvent (for example: isopropyl alcohol) is sufficient to ensure satisfactory bonding surfaces.
B) Sanding - Scuff sand the surfaces to be bonded if irregularities are present. This will facilitate a satisfactory bond.
C) Grinding - Care should be taken to completely grind off any paint or plating on the component at the bonding surface. This will ensure that we have a proper bonding surface.
II. Adhesive preparation and care - Follow adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.
A) Adhesive shelf life: Care should be taken to make sure that an adhesive is not used past the expiration date of the product as specified by the manufacturer.
III. Bonding procedures - In general, follow the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations, with these additional requirements:
A) Adhesive Coverage - Take care to apply sufficient adhesive. Unless otherwise specified, 90% of the bonded joint must have adhesive coverage to specified thickness after pressing into position. The method of adhesive dispensing must be controlled and repeatable to ensure adequate coverage and to minimize adhesive gaps and spills.
B) Adhesive Location - Care should be taken to completely apply adhesive around a bolt hole or slot area wherever a washer would make contact. Adhesive should be present around a minimum area of 100mm x 100mm around the axis of the hole or slot wherever permissible. This will ensure that there is no air gap present between the fiberglass part and the component which is being bonded to the fiberglass. Any air gap present may lead to the cracking of the fiberglass when the bolts and washers are being tightened during assembly.
C) Accurately Position Parts - Care should be taken to accurately position parts because sometimes they cannot be readily repositioned after contact has been made. Consult adhesive manufacturer's recommendations with respect to open time or bonding range to ensure a satisfactory bond.
D) Apply pressure to bring bonded surfaces firmly together over the entire joint area while maintaining specified bond thickness. Maintain pressure and specified bond thickness until the adhesive has reached handling strength.
E) Clean-up (removal of excess squeezed-out adhesive around edges of a bonded part) is required in certain areas where presence of adhesive will affect fit, function, or the appearance will negatively affect the customer's perception of the product.
