Remedial Actions to Undertake Before the Engine is Returned to Service
Note: This procedure should be carried out if there has been a problem with an electronic unit injector and the electronic unit injector has been replaced.
Caterpillar recommends the complete drain and flush of the complete fuel system, including the fuel tank to remove sources of contamination. Dispose of the fuel that was originally in the fuel tank in accordance with local regulations and mandates.
Replace all fuel filters, including the in-line fuel filter (if equipped). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedures.
Ensure that the end user uses 343-6210 Cleaner a minimum of 30 hours, which corresponds to a treat rate of 0.4 percent by volume. Repeat the use of 343-6210 Cleaner at next scheduled service interval or after 500 hours, whichever is sooner.
Use a dose of half strength 343-6210 Cleaner. This helps to inhibit corrosion and prevent the formation of deposits.
Change the engine oil and oil filter. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct procedure.
Ensure that the fuel supply is in the ON position. Ensure that the electric fuel priming pump is operating correctly. Ensure that the low-pressure hose assemblies have been correctly installed. Ensure that the return to the tank hose assembly is free from obstruction.
Start the engine. Operate the engine with no load at an engine speed of 1200 rpm for 10 minutes. Operating the engine under these conditions will clear the aftertreatment of any residual fuel from the issue with the electronic unit injectors. Ensure that there is no white smoke emitted from the exhaust system at the end of the 10 minutes.
Once there is no white smoke emitted from the exhaust system, gradually raise exhaust gas temperature to approximately 300° C (572° F) for 5 minutes.Note: The temperature can be monitored using DOC inlet temperature sensor and the electronic service tool.
Stop the engine.Note: Caterpillar 343-6210 Cleaner, is the only fuel system cleaner available to the end user that is tested and approved by Caterpillar for use in Caterpillar diesel engines.For sites that are more susceptible to deposits in the high-pressure fuel injection systems, maintain a supply of 343-6210 Cleaner to address the problem quickly.Note: Depending on the amounts of deposits, the fuel filter may become blocked after initial use of the cleaner due to removal of the deposits. The frequency of the blockages will decrease as the fuel system returns to a condition that is clean and stable.Perform the following recommendations to reduce the potential for the formation of deposits in the high-pressure fuel injection system:
Before the engine fuel tank is filled with fuel from a storage tank, filter the fuel through an absolute filter of 4 µm.
Use filters of 4 µm filtration on the breathers of fuel storage tanks. In dusty environments, use a filter of 4 µm on the breather of the engine fuel tank.
Regularly monitor bulk fuel to ensure that concentrations of calcium, sodium, zinc, and magnesium are less than one
