Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are damaged or worn use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Apply a thin film of 4C-9507 Retaining Compound around the inner side wall of bushing (7) in order to retain seal (10). Use tool (C) to install seal (10) into bushing (7). Install O-ring (11) onto bushing (7).

Use tool (C) to install ball bearing (9) into bushing (7). Use tool (B) to install snap ring (8) in order to retain ball bearing (9).

Slide bushing (7) onto axle shaft (1). Use a rubber mallet to strike bushing (7) in order to position the bushing. Use tool (A) to install snap ring (6) in order to retain bushing (7).

Use a second person to help you support axle shaft (1) while you carefully install the axle shaft. The weight of the axle shaft is 17 kg (38 lb). You may need to rotate the shaft or the differential in order to line up the splines.

Illustration 8 g00730477Note: All axle shafts can be installed without removing axle housing (12) except the left front axle shaft.
Install a suitable sling and a suitable hoist in order to support axle housing (12). The weight of axle housing (12) and the axle shaft (1) is 82 kg (178 lb). Apply a small amount of 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound onto the threads of 12 bolts (13) and two nuts (14). Install the axle housing and secure the axle housing with 12 bolts (13) and two nuts (14). Tighten the bolts and the nuts to a torque of 235 10 N m (173 7 lb ft). Remove the sling.

Install grub screw (5) and tighten locknut (4) to a torque of 87.5 1.5 N m (64.5 1 lb ft).

Turn each adjusting screw (3) clockwise by three quarters of a turn in order to obtain the correct clearance between the brake discs. Tighten three locknuts (2) in order to lock three adjusting screws (3) in position. End By:
Install the final drive and wheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive and Wheel - Install".
