(6) Oil fillThe vacuum pump (1) is located in the middle of the flywheel cabinet. Refer to Illustration 1. The vacuum pump (1) is used to create a vacuum in the flywheel assembly so that friction from air resistance is reduced. The reduction in the resistance (air) allows the flywheels to spin without the added loss of energy. The vacuum pump (1) draws air from the bottom of the flywheel housing.Vacuum pressure in the flywheels should be low before you begin operation. When the vacuum goes above a minimum allowable pressure, a green notice will be recorded in the log file. The flywheel will shut down if the following conditions are met:
The vacuum reaches the maximum allowable pressure.
The vacuum remains at the maximum allowable pressure for 30 minutes. The vacuum pump (1) contains oil that is used to help perform the following functions:
Producing vacuum
Lubricating the mechanism for the vacuum pumpChange the oil in the vacuum pump (1) annually. Oil is removed via the front drain through the middle shield.
The vacuum pump runs off 230 VAC from the output of the UPS. Do not change the voltage. Changing the voltage could damage the system and/or the vacuum pump.
Removal Procedure
Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, UENR3954, "Internal Component Preremoval Steps (Flywheel Cabinet)" in order to shut down the system and gain access to internal components.
Turn off power to the vacuum pump (1) by switching the power switch on the left side to the OFF position.
Disconnect the power connector from the right side of the vacuum pump (1).
Remove the intake tube that is connected to the top of the vacuum pump.
Remove the exhaust vacuum tube that is connected to the top of the vacuum pump.
Loosen and then turn the front right and rear left hold down clamps at the base of the pump.
Lift the vacuum pump off the mounting studs.Installation Procedure
Verify that the power switch is set to the OFF position. The power switch is located on the left side of the vacuum pump, near the rearward side.
Set the pump over the mounting studs.
Turn the hold down clamps so that when tightened, the clamps will secure the vacuum pump.
Clean and then grease the O-ring for the intake connector. Clean and then grease the O-ring for the exhaust connector.
Attach the intake vacuum tube to the top of the vacuum pump. Attach the exhaust vacuum tube to the top of the vacuum pump.
Connect the power connector to the right side of the pump.
Fill the new pump with Caterpillar recommended pump oil. The oil capacity of the vacuum pump is 0.5 L (0.5 qt).
Change the power switch to the ON position to turn on the vacuum pump (1).
