MID 087 - Chassis ECMCID 0702 - Transmission Gear Lever Selector Sensor (Switch)FMI 04 - Voltage Below Normal
Illustration 1 g02745016
Shift control lever position sensor circuit
This diagnostic code indicates the Chassis ECM detects the transmission gear lever selector sensor circuit voltage is below normal. The following can cause this code:
Sensor signal circuit shorted to ground
Failed sensor
Failed ECMNote: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created codes and clear these created codes after the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that MID 087 CID 0702 FMI 04 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use a calibrated digital multimeter for this procedure.Test Step 1. INSPECT THE SENSOR
Visually inspect the sensor, sensor wiring, and sensor hardware. Expected Result:There is no apparent damage to the sensor, wiring, or hardware. Results:
OK - There is no apparent damage to the sensor, wiring, or hardware. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - There is apparent damage to the sensor, wiring, or hardware.Repair: Replace the damaged part.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK FOR POWER AT THE SENSORDo not disconnect the harness from the sensor.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a multimeter probe along contact 1 (wire 173-RD(Red)).
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Measure the voltage from contact 1 (wire 173-RD(Red)) to contact 2 (wire J878-YL(Yellow)). Expected Result:The voltage is between 9 and 32 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage is between 9 and 32 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The voltage is not between 9 and 32 VDC. The circuit is open. Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch. The multimeter probe remains along contact 2 (wire J878-YL(Yellow)).
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert the other multimeter probe along contact 3 (wire M997-PU(Purple)).
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Monitor the sensor signal with a multimeter.
Without disconnecting the sensor or sensor hardware from the machine, take the sensor through the full operating range. Expected Result:The sensor responds as described at the beginning of this procedure. CID 0702 FMI 04 is not active. Results:
OK - The sensor responds as described at the beginning of this procedure. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The sensor does not respond as described at the beginning of this procedure. The sensor has failed.Repair: Replace the sensor.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK THE ECM SIGNAL
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
Insert the multimeter probes into the back of the ECM connector along J2-35 (wire M997-PU(Purple)) and J2-22 (wire J878-YL(Yellow)).
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Monitor the sensor signal with a multimeter.
Without disconnecting the sensor or sensor hardware from the machine, take the sensor through the full operating range of the sensor. Expected Result:The sensor responds as described at the beginning of this procedure. Results:
OK - The sensor responds as described at the beginning of this procedure. Proceed to Test Step 5.
