Components of the Transmission Oil Filter (1) Inlet passage (2) Housing (3) Filter element (4) Outlet passage (5) Bypass valvePressure oil from the charging section of the transmission oil pump flows into the filter base through inlet passage (1). The oil flows through the filter base to housing (2). The oil fills the space between the inside of the housing and filter element (3). The oil then flows through the filter element into outlet passage (4). The filter element stops any debris that is in the oil from passing into the outlet passage.If filter element (3) becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes a pressure increase inside the filter. If the difference in pressure reaches 248 21 kPa (36 3 psi), bypass valve (5) will open. The oil then flows to outlet passage (4). When the oil bypasses the filter element, debris in the oil will cause damage to the other system components.Correct maintenance must be used to ensure that filter element (3) does not become full of debris.
