E-Mail FACTSPrior to obtaining a fuel sample, the following criteria must be met:
The fuel supply tank is below 25 percent of capacity.
The engine has been operating for at least ten minutes. Obtain the sample while the engine is warm.
The hose assembly that is used to collect the sample must be clean.
The sampling bottle must be clean.
The sampling bottle must be non-reactive materials.
The sampling bottle must not be made of materials that contain any trace of sulfur.
The sampling bottle must be approved by Caterpillar. The quantity of the sample that is required will vary with the amount of testing that is requested. The minimum quantity of the sample is 0.5 L (1 pint). The maximum quantity of the sample is 1 L (1 qt).The hose assembly and the connectors that are shown in Illustration 1 can be used to take fuel samples from most 3500 Engines.

The fuel is under pressure and may spray out when the valve is opened. Personal injury can result. Ensure that you wear eye protection at all times while obtaining a fuel sample.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.
Stop the engine.
Attach the hose assembly to the appropriate port for obtaining a fuel sample.
Use a clean towel to wipe
