Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortenedcomponent life.
Illustration 1 g06121148Note: Ring grooves are to be 100% lubricated with engine oil prior to the assembly of the rings.
Use Tooling (C) to install piston rings (7) onto piston (8).Note: Assemble top ring with side marked "UP-1". toward top of piston.Note: Assemble middle ring with side marked "Up-2 toward top of piston.Note: Oil ring spring ends to be assembled 180° from ring end gap.
After rings have been assembled, rotate rings so the end gaps are 120° apart. Oil ring end gap must be in pin bore plane.
Pin mating surfaces: from pin (6) to pin bore and pin (6) to bearing must be 100% lubricated with engine oil prior to assembly.
Position connecting rod (4) in piston (8) and install piston pin (6).
Illustration 2 g06122176
Use Tooling (B) to install the snap rings (5) in position shownto hold the piston pin (6).
Check the clearance of the bearings. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bearing Clearance Check" for the correct procedure.Note: Thoroughly lubricate piston assembly and liner with clean engine oil just before installation.
Install the upper half of the connecting rod bearing in the connecting rod (4), ensure that the tab on the back of the bearing is in the bearing tab groove on the connecting rod (4).
Illustration 3 g06121075
Place clean engine oil on the piston rings and the cylinder liner bore. Use Tooling (D) to compress the piston rings.
Install the piston (3) and connecting rod assembly in the engine.
Ensure that the piston and connecting rod assemblyare installed in the engine with the chamfer of the connectingrod bore next to the crank pin thrust surface. The opposite side should also thrust against themating rod on the crank pin.
Illustration 4 g06121063
Install the lower half of the connecting rod bearing in connecting rod cap (2). Ensure that the tab on the back of the bearing is in the bearing tab groove on the connecting rod cap (2).
Place clean engine oil on the upper half and on the lower half of the connecting rod bearing.
Apply Tooling (E) to the threads of the bolts (1) and the threads in the connecting rod caps (2).
Position connecting rod cap (2) on the connecting rod and install bolts (1) in the connecting rod cap (2).
Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Connecting Rod Bearings - Removal and Install" for the correct tightening procedure for the bolts in the connecting cap.End By:
Install the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Removal and Install".
Install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Install".
