Engine:
3600 DieselThe 4C-5719 Piston Ring Compressor must be installed properly on a piston before the piston is installed in the above engine. Incorrect installation of the tool can damage the oil ring. The clearance for the oil ring allows the gap end of the oil ring to fall out of the ring groove. The end of the oil ring becomes trapped between the piston ring compressor and the piston. The oil ring breaks when the piston ring compressor is tightened. A broken oil ring can lead to excessive oil consumption. A broken ring can also damage the cylinder liner. In time, a damaged cylinder liner could lead to a catastrophic engine failure. The proper installation of the piston ring compressor will retain the oil ring in the groove. The procedure that follows will allow proper assembly and installation of the parts.

Illustration 2 g01325250
Text on the second intermediate ringIllustration 1 and Illustration 2 show the markings that identify the top compression and second intermediate rings, respectively. The rings must be installed so that the text is facing up. The ring gaps must be located 120° apart. If the rings are not properly installed, excessive oil consumption can result.
Illustration 3 g01325252
Proper installation keeps the white portion visible in the oil ring gap1. Install the top compression ring in the top ring groove. Install the ring so that UP1 is toward the top of the piston. Refer to Illustration 1.2. Install the second intermediate ring in the second ring groove. Install the ring so that UP2 is toward the top of the piston. Refer to Illustration 2.3. Install the oil ring in the third ring groove. The white mark on the spring must be visible through the oil ring gap. Refer to Illustration 3.4. Position all of the rings with 120° between the ring gaps. The ring gaps should not be aligned after installation.5. Apply clean oil to all of the rings.6. Push the gap in the oil ring into the groove.7. Slide the 4C-5719 Piston Ring Compressor all the way onto the piston. Note the location of the gap in the oil ring.
Illustration 4 g01325253
8. Use one hand to press and hold the piston ring compressor over the gap in the oil ring. Refer to Illustration 4.9. Use the other hand to close the piston ring compressor. Clamp the tool. The tool should close easily without force. If necessary, adjust the closing force. To adjust the closing force, turn the adjustment handle.
Illustration 5 g01325254
10. Inspect the stop gap when the piston ring compressor is closed. The gap at the bottom of the tool should be slightly smaller than the gap at the top of the tool.
Illustration 6 g01325255
11. The stop position for the closed tool might need adjustment. Use the setscrew and the locknut for adjustment. Refer to Illustration 6.12. The piston assembly is now ready for installation in the engine.
