Introduction
The OR1291 and OR1292 Remanufactured Short Block Groups are available for use in the reconditioning of a 3406B Truck Engine (see the adaptability chart in this instruction). Parts in the short block group are as follows: cylinder block assembly; cylinder liners; pistons and piston rings; connecting rods and connecting rod bearings; crankshaft and crankshaft bearings; cylinder block information plate; various protective covers. All other parts needed must be removed from the former engine, cleaned and inspected. Make a thorough inspection of these parts to be sure they are in a good enough condition to be used again. Those parts that are not within specifications must either be reconditioned, or replaced with new parts. 1. Clean the protective coating from all parts in the short block group. After installation of the camshaft, put clean engine oil on the cylinder liner walls and the lifters. Turn the crankshaft several revolutions to get a good distribution of lubricant on these parts.2. Before further installation of parts on the new short block, check crankshaft end clearance. See the Service Manual for procedure and specifications. Check the cylinder head for flatness. Refer to the specifications in the Service Manual.3. Install the remainder of the parts needed on the new short block. Always use new gaskets and seals. See the Service Manual for torque values, tightening sequences, special tools, special procedures and specifications for assembly of the engine components.4. Be sure to check face runout (axial eccentricity) and bore runout (radial eccentricity) of both the flywheel and the flywheel housing.5. When engine assembly and installation is complete, put the correct type and amount of oil in the engine oil pan. See the engine Operation and Maintenance Guide for oil pan fill requirement.Before starting the engine, do the pressure lubrication procedure as given in Special Instruction Form SMHS7701, entitled, Pressure Lubrication Procedure for Remanufactured Engines and Short Blocks.6. Start the engine and let it run at low idle. Check for correct oil pressure and coolant temperature. Correct any oil pressure or coolant temperature problems. Check for leaks and make repairs as necessary.
