Differential Bearing Preload
The differential bearings must be preloaded at assembly. Bearing preload is determined by measuring the torque required to rotate the differential in its bearings. The correct torque should be 50 to 70 lb. in. (57.7 to 80.7 cm.kg).Using 8B7554 Puller and a 9S7354 Wrench (2), determine the torque required to rotate the differential.Tighten adjusting nut (1) (on either side of differential) until desired torque reading is obtained. When correct torque to rotate the differential is obtained, be certain the bevel gear is positioned so there will be backlash when the pinion shaft is installed.
CHECKING BEARING PRELOAD
1. Adjusting nut. 2. 9S7354 Torqometer Wrench. Tools Needed: 8B7554 Bearing Cup Pulling Attachment, 5F7345 Screw, 5/8" - 18 NF nut. After the pinion shaft and housing have been installed, adjust the backlash.Bevel Gear And Pinion Setting
The bevel gear and pinion must be located properly to obtain the correct tooth contact. Shims are provided between the pinion shaft bearing housing and the differential carrier, so the pinion can be moved toward or away from the centerline of the bevel gear and axles. Adjusting nuts are provided in the differential carrier to permit moving the bevel gear toward or away from the centerline of the bevel pinion shaft, thereby changing the backlash. Moving either the bevel gear or the pinion affects both backlash and tooth contact so the two must be adjusted at the same time. Because of manufacturing tolerances, the relative positions of the bevel gear and the pinion gear will vary with different sets.Backlash Adjustment
The amount of backlash, to be allowed between each bevel gear and pinion set on original installation, is determined at the factory. On a replacement gear or pinion, adjust the backlash to .0125 .0015 in. (0.318 0.038 mm).Position the differential with axle centerline in horizontal position and bevel gear as illustrated. Fasten a dial indicator to the differential carrier. Place the finger of the dial indicator on the bevel gear tooth and rock the bevel gear back and forth.
The backlash must be checked with bevel pinion shaft pushed toward centerline of bevel gear and held stationary.
Note the difference in readings which is the amount of backlash on the dial indicator. Check the backlash at four different locations on the bevel gear, taking the lowest reading as the position to check the backlash.
CHECKING BACKLASH
1. Adjusting nut. 2. Adjusting nut.
Differential bearing preload is maintained only if bearing slack caused by loosening one adjusting nut is compensated for by tightening the other adjusting nut an equal amount.
If the reading is too great at the point of least backlash, loosen adjusting nut (2) and tighten adjusting nut (1) an equal amount. To increase backlash, loosen adjusting nut (1) and tighten adjusting nut (2) an equal amount.Bevel Pinion Location
If the same pinion shaft is reinstalled in the same housing and with the same carrier, and bevel gear, use the same shims between the flange on the housing and the carrier that were removed when the pinion shaft housing was removed.
