Typical view of the 1W-2834 Relief Valve. (1) Locknut. (2) Spindle nut. (3) Cover. (4) Valve spring. (5) Spring cap and seal retainer. (6) Valve plate. (7) Spindle seal. (8) Spindle seal. (9) Carrier. (10) Gauze assembly. The 2W-3584 Valve Kit contains:
* (6) Valve plate.* (7) Spindle seal (O-ring seal).* (8) Spindle seal (O-ring seal). The valve plate, and two spindle seals above do not have Caterpillar part numbers. The parts come from the supplier when ordered individually. The 1W-2834 Relief Valve is serviceable through Caterpillar Parts Service. Disassembly
1. Shut OFF the engine and allow it to cool.2. Remove the 1W-2834 Relief Valve from the engine side cover (six bolts).3. Remove the locknut (1) and the cover (3).4. Remove the spindle nut (2) while holding down the valve spring (4) with your hand. You must hold down the valve spring because it will fly off the valve spindle when the spindle nut is removed.5. Remove the valve spring, the spring cap, and the seal retainer (5), the valve plate (6), and the spindle seals (7 and 8).6. Slide the new valve plate over the valve spindle so the molded rubber seal seats on the carrier (9).7. Inspect the gauze assembly (10) for tears or holes. Replace damaged gauze assemblies. Flames could escape through a damaged gauze assembly during an explosion. Assembly
1. Lightly grease the valve spindle and the threads and slide the large spindle seal (8) and the smaller spindle seal (7) over the valve spindle.2. Place the seal retainer (5) over the spindle seal with the cupped side facing DOWN.3. Place the valve spring over the spindle so that it sits evenly on the seal retainer.4. Place the spring cap on top of the valve spring and compress the valve spring by hand. Thread the spindle nut on the valve spindle. Tighten the spindle nut all the way down and then loosen it two turns.5. Place the cover on the valve spindle with the opening facing DOWN. Thread on the locknut. While tightening the locknut, center the valve plate on the carrier so the valve plate seats firmly all around.6. The cover should seat firmly on the flange on the outside of the carrier. The cover should bow down to provide tension. If the cover does not seat firmly on the flange, turn the spindle nut under the cover down until the cover seats on the flange. Tighten the locknut down to the cover and tighten until the cover has a slight bow. This will keep the cover tight against the flange.
