Monitoring Methods
Caterpillar Monitoring System
Place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in calibration mode. Once in calibration mode, several additional submodes become available.
Use sub-mode 1 in order to monitor the duty cycle for the lift arm position sensor. The sensor for the duty cycle is shown on the display area of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. A number with three digits is shown. For example, 143 represents 14.3%. Payload Monitor
Place the Payload System in the Mode for Weighing. Press the "Mode" key.
Press the "SCROLL" key once. The sensor for the duty cycle is shown on the payload display. A number with three digits is shown. For example, 143 represents 14.3%. Caterpillar Electronic Technician
Connect the Electronic Technician to the diagnostic connector. Select Implement Electronic Control from the menu of the electronic control module.
Use the status display mode in order to observe the duty cycle of the lift arm position sensor. Multimeter
Connect the following items to the harness of the front frame with the keyswitch in the OFF position. DO NOT disconnect the machine harness from the lift linkage position sensor.
Connect the red lead (voltage) from the multimeter to wire C530-BU. Connect by inserting the probe into the rear of the 3 pin connector.
Connect the black lead from the multimeter to wire 299-BK. Connect by inserting the probe into the rear of the 3 pin connector.
Place the meter selector switch on "AC Voltage".
Press the frequency Hz button twice on the multimeter. The frequency Hz button selects the percent duty cycle.Adjustment

Lift Sensor Adjustment (A) 168 mm (6.614 inch). (1) Lift arm bail. (2) Lever for Position sensor. (3) Position sensor shaft. (4) Nuts to secure adjusting rod. (5) Locking bolt.
If the position sensor is extended beyond maximum limits, damage to the sensor will occur.
Put the lift arm in the full lower position. The bucket must be tilted back completely. Stop the engine.
Assemble adjusting rod with ends to dimension (A).
Connect the rod assembly to the lift arm bail (1). Connect the rod assembly to the lever for position sensor (2).
Loosen locking bolt (5) so that the lever for position sensor (2) can rotate freely on the position sensor shaft (3) .
Monitor the duty cycle of the lift arm position sensor. Use one of the methods that were described previously: multimeter, ET, Payload Monitoring System and Caterpillar Monitoring System.
Rotate the position sensor shaft (3) until the value that is shown on the display is 18% 4%. Note: The display on the Caterpillar Monitoring System and the display on the Payload Control System are displayed in .1 of a percent. The Caterpillar Monitoring System and the Payload Control System displays the duty cycle for the sensor. When "180" is shown the value is "18.0%".
Tighten locking bolt (5) .
Start the engine and operate at low idle.
Slowly raise the bucket. Observe the reading of the position sensor. The reading should not exceed 90%. If the reading reaches 90% but the lift cylinder is not fully extended, lengthen the rod assembly in order to obtain a lower reading.
