3114, 3116, And 3126 Industrial, Marine, And Generator Set EnginesThe lubricant used when installing cylinder head bolts in these engines has changed from clean engine oil to 6V-4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant. It has been determined that the use of Molykote as the lubricant on head bolts at the time of cylinder head installation improves cylinder head gasket sealing and therefore reduces the possibility of head gasket leakage.
6V-4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant is now used as the production lubricant for cylinder head bolts on all 3114, 3116, and 3126 engines and is now required as the lubricant to use anytime the engine cylinder head is removed and installed. Service Manuals are being changed to reflect the use of the 6V-4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant. Until revised manuals are issued, change the instructions pertaining to lubricating the head bolts prior to installation in the Cylinder Head Removal and Installation Section of the Service Manuals for 3114, 3116, and 3126 Commercial Engines to the following:
Put 6V-4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant on the threads of the cylinder head bolts and on both sides of the washers. Install and tighten the bolts as follows:
Do not use engine oil or other lubricant on the cylinder head bolts. The use of 6V-4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant is required to insure proper tightening of the cylinder head bolts which will result in improved cylinder head gasket sealing.
