Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Do not fill fuel filter with fuel before installing the fuel filter. Contaminated fuel causes accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The fuel shutoff valve is located at the rear of the machine under the fuel tank. Turn the red handle of the fuel shutoff valve in order to shut off the fuel supply.
Remove the access cover on the left side of the engine compartment.

In order to drain primary filter (1), open drain valve (3) on water separator bowl (2). The water separator bowl is under primary filter (1). Catch the fuel in a suitable container. Note: Discard any drained fluids according to local regulations.
Remove primary filter (1) and water separator bowl (2).
Remove water separator bowl (2) from the primary filter element (1).
Wash water separator bowl (2) in a clean nonflammable solvent. Use pressure air to dry water separator bowl (2).
Install the clean water separator bowl onto a new primary filter element.
Wash the filter mounting base in clean, nonflammable solvent. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed.
Coat the seal of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.
Install the new filter element by hand. When the seal contacts the base, tighten the filter element for an additional 3/4 turn. Rotation index marks are positioned on the filter elements at 90 degree intervals. Use these rotation index marks as a guide when you tighten the filter.
Open the fuel shutoff valve.
Prime the fuel system, if the machine is equipped with a priming pump. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the proper procedure.
Install the access cover.
