The FP40+ is an extremely simple printer to use. If you have followed the instructions to unpack and prepare the FP40+ for use and the printer is in contact with a host computer that is configured correctly to communicate with it, you should be able to print text using the default printer configuration explained on page 25.This chapter explains some of the powerful facilities available through the effective use of the FP40+ control sequences. A separate FP40 Series Technical Reference Manual describes use of the control sequences in detail.Control
Figure 8 shows the 9-way D-type connector and the paper feed switch. The 9-way D-type connector provides the following functions:* Communication between the FP40+ and the host computer.* Connection to charge the FP40+ battery.* With the BE40 battery eliminator in place of the battery pack, the FP40+ can be powered from an external source, such as a vehicle battery.Full pin connection details for the 9-way D-type connector are given in the FP40 Series Technical Reference Manual. The paper feed switch enables you to feed paper as follows:* Press the paper feed switch momentarily to advance the paper to the next head-of-form mark.* Press and hold the switch to advance the paper continuously. When you release the switch the paper will stop at the next head-of-form mark.
If paper without head-of-form marks is used do not press the paper feed switch as the paper will continuously feed. This is due to the FP40+ being unable to detect head-of-form marks to stop the feed. If the paper feed switch is inadvertently pressed while using non head-of-form paper open the printer rear panel and remove the battery to stop the paper feed.Default settings
When you first power-on the FP40+ it uses the following default configuration:* 8 inch (200 mm) form length with head-of-form sensing enabled.* Text mode.* U.S. character set.* 1/6-inch (4.23 mm) line spacing.* Horizontal tab characters equal to eight space characters. You may alter these settings once you have established a communication link between the host computer and the printer. To do this you must send a series of control sequences to the printer as explained in the FP40 Series Technical Reference Manual.Printing text
Printing a line of text on the FP40+ using the standard type style and the U.S. character set simply requires you to send the character stream to the printer and terminate it with the line feed character <LF>. However, the FP40+ is capable of print much more, including:* Emphasized (bold) text.* Underlined text.* Double strike text.* Reduced and increased height text.* Narrow and wide characters.* Sideways or upside down text.* Two standard optical character recognition fonts (OCR-A and OCR-B).* Using any one of ten other character sets to print characters in most European languages.* Using a user-defined custom character set.Refer to the separate FP40 Series Technical Reference Manual for details of the control sequences necessary to access these features.Printing graphics
The FP40+ can print high quality graphic images in bitmapped form. You may either adapt raster graphics files for printing yourself (with help from
