Affected area
The 7N-9322 Compressor Drive Gear failures are reported from the field. Most of the failures were reported around 15000 hours. The probable root cause could be the compressor installation procedure followed in the field.Solution
Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but a permanent repair has not yet been defined. As an interim action, follow the installation procedure given below.Installation Procedure

(1) Compressor
Check all O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage in compressor (1). Replace the components, if necessary.

(2) Flywheel housing
(A) Bore for compressor mounting
(B) Bore for tube
Lubricate all O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Lubricate the bore (A) and bore (B) of flywheel housing (2) with clean engine oil.
Use two people to slide the integral seal and air compressor (1) onto the studs. The weight of air compressor (1) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

Locate compressor (1) on to fly wheel housing with the guide of studs (3).
Push compressor (1) towards the flywheel housing (2) by hand.

(4) Gear teeth
Align compressor teeth of gear (4) with mating gear (inside gear of flywheel housing). Rotate the gear by using a proper hand tool to align the compressor gear with mating gear.

(5) O-ring seal joint
(6) Bottom tube
Push again the compressor (1) to ensure proper seating until it reaches the O-ring seal joint (5). Using only hand push, ensure that the gear teeth can move freely.
Simultaneously ensure the proper seating of bottom tube (6). If bottom tube (6) is not seated properly, then align tube (6) to locate in the bore (B) of flywheel housing (2). Use proper hand tool to align tube (6).

(8) Nut
Install washers (7) and nuts (8) to air compressor (1).
Tighten all three nuts (8) evenly by hand tool.
Ensure compressor (1) slides smoothly in to the bore (A). If not, rotate the crank shaft and ensure the gears are engaged properly.
Torque nuts (8) as per standard.
Refer Disassembly and Assembly, KENR8339, "773E Off-Highway Truck Engine Supplement" , Accessory Drive (Air Compressor) - Remove and Install to complete the assembly procedure.
