Assembly Procedure
Failure to properly assemble parts or failure to follow established procedures can lead to damage to the parts and assembly.To avoid damage to parts, always identify and mark the parts so that they can be installed into the same location. Never force parts during assembly. Keep parts clean and lubricated.
Note: Use the identification marks from disassembly in order to assemble the differential properly. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Install thrust washer (24) and sun gear (23) .
Install thrust washer (22) and six thrust washers (21) .

Install two bearings (19) and spacer (20) to each gear (15) .

Install two bearings (17) and spacer (18) to each gear (14) .

Install the following items to the differential: six pins (12), three gears (14), three gears (15), six thrust washers (13) and spur gear (16) .

Lower the temperature of spider (10) and install bearing (11). Use an appropriate driver in order to reset the bearing.

Note: Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound to the mating surfaces of the spider and the differential. Do not allow the retaining compound to contact other components.
Install spider (10) and bearing (11) onto the differential. Align the holes of the spider with the holes in the differential.

Install nine bolts (9). Tighten the bolts evenly in order to position the spider parallel to the surface. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 100 15 N m (74 11 lb ft). Turn the bolts by an additional distance of 120 10 degrees.
Peen the edges of three holes (25) in order to retain the dowels.
Use an appropriate nylon lifting sling and a hoist in order to rotate the differential to the opposite side.

Install three spring pins (7) and three spring pins (8) .

Note: Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound to the mating surfaces of the spur gear and the differential. Do not allow the retaining compound to contact other components.
Position spur gear (2) to the differential. Align the holes in the gear with the holes in the differential.Note: Apply 7M-7456 Compound to the threads of 12 bolts (1) .
Install 12 bolts (1) that secure spur gear (2). Tighten the bolts evenly in order to position the gear parallel to the surface. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft).
Heat bearing (6). Install the bearing onto the differential. Use an appropriate driver in order to reset the bearing.
Install drive dog (5), pin (4), and retaining ring (3) .End By: Install the interaxle differential. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Interaxle Differential - Install".
