Component Code 5100SUBJECT: CENTERING SPRING IN RIPPER CONTROL HANDLE MAY FAIL
PROBLEM:
There have been reports of the 183-3205 Springs failing in the 183-3208 Ripper Implement Control Group. These springs are used to center both the ripper raise and the ripper shank control levers. Failure of the springs can prevent the control levers from returning to center, which will result in excessive drift in these circuits. This can also lead to the hydraulic circuit overheating.
SOLUTION:
The problem above is being investigated. In the interim, continue to use the 183-3205 spring for repairs but please review the following installation procedure to make sure that the control lever is repaired correctly. Incorrect assembly of the 183-3205 Springs into the 183-3208 Ripper Implement Control Group will result in a repeat failure of the spring shortly after repairing the control lever. This installation procedure also applies to the 135-6276 Ripper Implement Control Group that is utilized on the D11R 9XR Track-Type Tractor. The 183-3205 Spring is the service replacement for the 145-3858 Spring originally used in those groups.
If a failure of the 183-3205 Spring has occurred, it is likely the associated control lever will not center properly. In that event, an error message will be displayed at start up or when the implement deactivation switch is toggled. The displayed text can be either "RIP LIFT ACT" or "RIP I/O ACT", depending upon which control lever is not centered. In addition, an event code of EID 296 will be logged in the VIDS system. If these error messages or events are encountered, Caterpillar recommends inspection of the 183-3205 Springs to determine if they have failed.
When repairing the 183-3205 Springs, please make sure that the spring is installed by using the following installation procedure.
