Information:
Fire may result from lubricating oil or from fuel that is sprayed onto hot surfaces. Fire may cause personal injury and property damage. To avoid potential fire hazards, utilize the following safety precautions:
Inspect all lines for both wear and deterioration.
Check all tubes for both wear and deterioration.
Make sure that all lines are routed properly.
Make sure that all lines are connected securely with proper supports and/or clamps.
Tighten all connections to the recommended torque. Determine if the engine will be operated in an environment that allows combustible gases to be drawn in through the air inlet system. These gases could cause the engine to overspeed. This could result in bodily injury, property damage, or damage to the engine. If the application involves the presence of combustible gases, consult your Caterpillar dealer in order to obtain additional information concerning suitable protection devices. If the application involves the presence of an air conditioner, do not smoke around the air conditioner. Also, do not smoke if the following services are performed:
Servicing the air conditioner
Charging the air conditioner
Performing work around a leaking air conditionerBodily harm or death could result from the following items:
Inhaling freon through a lighted cigarette
Inhaling fumes released from a flame that contacts freon.DO NOT allow these situations to occur when an air conditioner is serviced. DO NOT allow these situations to occur when freon may be present.Any exposed fuel can cause a fire under these conditions:
Fuel spilled onto hot surfaces and onto electrical components.
Fuel leaked onto hot surfaces or onto electrical components. All fuels, most lubricants, and some coolant mixtures are flammable. Both diesel fuel and gasoline are very flammable. A mixture of both diesel fumes and gasoline fumes is extremely explosive.Do not smoke while the engine is refueled. Do not smoke in the refueling area.Heed the following safety precautions for the storage of flammable materials:
Store all fuels in properly marked containers.
Store all lubricants in properly marked containers.
Store the protective containers in a safe place.
Store oily rags in protective containers.
Store any other flammable materials in protective containers.Do not smoke in areas that contain flammable material.Do not smoke in battery charging areas. Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode. When pipes contain flammable liquids and/or tubes contain flammable liquids, do not weld on these components. Also, do not flame cut either component that contains flammable liquids. Follow these safety precautions:
Clean the inside of the pipes thoroughly with nonflammable solvent, and clean the outside of the pipes thoroughly with nonflammable solvent.
Clean the inside of the tubes thoroughly with nonflammable solvent, and clean the outside of the tubes thoroughly with nonflammable solvent.Do not allow flammable materials to accumulate on the engine.Do not expose the engine to flames.Any flammable materials that contact hot exhaust components may be hazardous. A failure of any of the following items that are near any hot exhaust components may cause a fire or an explosion:
a line
a tube
a sealExhaust shields (if equipped) will protect any hot exhaust components from both oil and fuel spray.Exhaust shields must be installed correctly.Dispose of oil according to local regulations.
