Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

Remove the bolts that hold elbow (1) and elbow (2) to the turbochargers. Remove the elbows from the pipes.
Remove the gaskets from elbow (1) and elbow (2).

Remove pipe (3) and pipe (4) from housing (5).

Remove housing (5), housing (6), and housing (7) from the rear aftercooler housing.

Remove the bolts that hold flanges (8) in place. Remove flanges and tube (9) as an assembly.
Remove the bolts and the retainers that hold tube (10) in place inside of elbow (11).
Remove the bolts and spacers (12) that hold elbow (11) in position. Remove the elbow from the aftercooler and tube (10).

Remove pipes (13) and pipes (14) from the aftercooler housings.
Remove the O-ring seals from pipes (13) and pipes (14).
Remove the bolts that hold pipes (15) to the rear aftercooler housing.
Remove the O-ring seals from pipes (15).

Attach a suitable lifting device to the front aftercooler housing. The weight of the front aftercooler housing is approximately 236 kg (520 lb). Remove the bolts from the front aftercooler housing. Remove the front aftercooler housing from the cylinder block.
Attach a suitable lifting device to rear aftercooler housing (16). The weight of rear aftercooler housing (16) is approximately 236 kg (520 lb). Remove bolts (17) from the rear aftercooler housing. Remove the rear aftercooler housing from the cylinder block.

Remove gaskets (18) from the cylinder block.
