Machine ECM
The following is a list of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that are associated with the Cat Data Link of the machine.
Table 1
Machine ECM (MID 39)
DTC Code Description System Response
248-9 Cat Data Link: Abnormal Update Rate The machine ECM will not be able to receive certain information from the engine ECM.
590-9 Engine Control Module: Abnormal Update Rate Some machine and engine-related functions may not work properly.
590-14 Engine Control Module: Special Instruction Some machine and engine-related functions may not work properly. Possible causes for an FMI 9 diagnostic code are:
A fuse for one of the ECM modules may have failed.
The software is incorrect or incompatible for one of the modules within the data link.
The machine harness has failed.
One of the ECM modules in the data link has failed.

Schematic of the Cat Data Link
Note: The diagram above is a simplified schematic of the connections for the Cat Data Link. The schematic is electrically correct. However, not all of the possible harness connectors are shown. Refer to the latest revision of the electrical schematic for the specific machine being serviced for the complete schematic.Diagnostic Trouble Code Procedure
Note: Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in this circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. Check the wiring for pinch points or abrasions. Look for and repair areas that indicate wires are exposed. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing a troubleshooting procedure.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Identify The Active DTC Code Associated With The Cat Data Link
Code present. FMI 9 diagnostic code, proceed to Test Step 2.
Begin Process for FMI 9 Troubleshooting HERE
2. Verify The Hardware And The Software Part Numbers(1)
A. The part number of the flash software for the Machine ECM.
B. The part number of the flash software for the "Monitor Display" ECM.
C. The part number of all components related to the faulty Data Link Circuit.
All part numbers are correct. OK - All part numbers are correct.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - All of the part numbers are not correct.
Repair: A module has the wrong part number or the incorrect flash software is installed. Replace the incorrect module with a module that has the correct part number. Flash the correct software. See the Troubleshooting, "ECM Software - Install" section of this manual for additional information.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
3. Check For Shorts
A. The key start switch and disconnect switch remain OFF.
B. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from all electronic control modules that use the suspect Cat Data Link.
C. At the machine harness for the Machine ECM, measure the resistance between the positive contact for the Cat
