Excessive levels of copper have been found in the engine oil in some of the engines that are listed above. Copper (Cu) can be a catalyst for carbon deposits. The deposits can lead to problems with operation. The deposits can also cause premature wear of lubricated parts.Solution
The copper content in the engine oil needs to be monitored. Monitoring of the engine oil reveals trends that are used to maximize the service life of the oil in each specific engine.Cu is a wear element that is measured as part of the Caterpillar S O S oil analysis program. The results of the analysis are interpreted by S O S Services. Comments and recommendations are provided to the customer.To achieve the maximum service life of the engine oil and of the engine, follow the recommendations in Special Publication, PEDP8025, "Fluid Analysis Interpretaion Guide".Additionally, maintenance recommendations for different levels of Cu in the engine oil are provided in Table 1.

If the level of Cu has not increased by at least 10%, sample the engine oil again within 100 to 125 service hours.    
60 or more     Change the engine oil and the engine oil filter within 100 service hours.
