Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot low coolant pressure or use this procedure if the following event code is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes. You must access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".

E228(3) Low Jacket Water Outlet Pressure The pressure of the cooling system has fallen below the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The shutdown output is activated.
The engine is shut down. Probable Causes

Low Coolant Level
Check coolant level. If the coolant level is low, inspect the cooling system for leaks. Add coolant, if necessary.Insufficient Flow of Coolant
Shut down the engine and use the Cat ET in order to observe the pressure at the jacket water outlet. Then observe the reading during engine operation.If the reading is not reasonable or if the reading is not within specifications, install a pressure gauge near the pressure sensor at the jacket water outlet. Compare the gauge reading with the reading from Cat ET.Be sure to use an accurate gauge for your measurements. Use of gauges that are not properly calibrated can lead to an improper diagnosis of the problem.If the readings from the comparative gauge do not agree approximately with Cat ET, troubleshoot the circuit for the pressure sensor at the jacket water outlet. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (PWM) - Test".If the readings from the comparative gauge agree approximately with Cat ET, check for the following conditions:
Proper operation of the water temperature regulators
Plugging of the radiator, the heat exchanger, and the engine oil cooler
Damage to the impeller of the jacket water pumpPerform the necessary repairs.
