Schematic of the Engine Speed Sensor
The CID 0190 FMI 02 diagnostic code is recorded when the "Power Train" electronic control module (ECM) reads an abnormal signal from the engine speed sensor. The Power Train ECM will be unable to calculate the ratio of the torque converter. The "Power Train" ECM compares the signals from the engine speed sensor and the "Power Train" speed sensors. A CID 0190 FMI 02 diagnostic code is recorded when the signal from the engine speed sensor is below the dropout signal level, and the "Power Train" output speed sensors sense the engine speed as above low idle.Note: The engine must be running in order for the Power Train ECM to show this diagnostic code.Note: Each connector contact should withstand 45 N (10 lb) of pull. Each wire should remain in the connector body. This test checks whether the wire was properly crimped in the contact and whether the contact was properly inserted into the connector. Test Step 1. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SENSOR
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the speed sensor.
Measure the resistance between the two contacts of the speed sensor connector. Expected Result:The resistance is between 90 and 250 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is between 90 and 250 Ohms. The speed sensor is not faulty. Proceed to Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance is not between 90 and 250 Ohms.Repair: The speed sensor has failed. Replace the sensor. Adjust the speed sensor properly when you install the sensor. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Speed Sensor - Adjust".STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE RETURN CIRCUITNote: The machine harness remains disconnected from the sensor.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Measure the resistance between contact (wire 451-BR(Brown)) and the frame ground. Expected Result:The resistance is 20 Ohms or less. Results:
OK - The resistance is 20 ohms or less. The return circuit is correct. Proceed to Step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance is not 20 ohms or less.Repair: The return circuit (wire 451-BR(Brown)) has excessive resistance (open). Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE MACHINE HARNESS
Insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe between the two contacts of the speed sensor.
Disconnect machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the Power Train ECM.
At the machine harness connectors, measure the resistance from J1-2 (sensor signal) to J1-3 (return). Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5.0 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5.0 Ohms. The signal circuit in the machine harness is correct. Proceed to Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is not less than 5.0 Ohms.Repair: The signal circuit (wire 450-YL(Yellow)) is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL FOR A SHORT
Remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe.
At the machine harness connector, Measure the resistance between J1-2 (wire 450-YL(Yellow)) and all contacts that are used in the machine harness
