Schematic of the Cat Data LinkThis diagnostic code is recorded when the power train ECM reads an incorrect harness code from the Caterpillar Monitoring System via the Cat Data Link.A possible cause fo this diagnostic code is:
Intermittent Cat Data Link connection.The Cat Data Link is an input and an output of all electronic control modules. The Cat Data Link is designed to enable communications with all electronic control modules and service tools. The Cat Data Link is not a visible component. The Cat Data Link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0967 FMI 02 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.System Response:The identification code from the Caterpillar Monitoring System is not available. If the ECM had never been able to communicate with the Caterpillar Monitoring System, the ECM would not have allowed the machine to start. The ECM would not have allowed the machine to shift. Also, the ECM would not have allowed the machine to disengage the parking brake.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS.
Verify whether the following part numbers are correct:
Software part number for the ECM
Software part number for the Caterpillar Monitoring SystemExpected Result:Consult your Caterpillar dealer for the correct configuration for the machine. All part numbers are correct.Results:
OK - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - All part numbers are not correct. One of the electronic control modules may have the wrong part number and/or the software configuration is not correct.Repair: The appropriate flash file needs to be flashed into the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program". Stop.Test Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Inspect the machine harness connections that are related to the CAT Data Link. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.
Check the mating of the connector.
Check the wires at the connector.
Check each wire for nicks and/or signs of abrasion in the insulation.
Check for moisture at the connector.
Check for dirty contacts and/or corroded contacts.
Check each pin and check each socket.Expected Result:The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.Results:
OK - The machine harness connectors are tight and the connectors are free of corrosion. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The machine harness connectors require repair.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness. Verify that the repair corrects the problem. Stop.Test Step 3. CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES.
Ensure that all electronic control modules that use the Cat Data Link are connected.
Turn the battery disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Acknowledge any active diagnostic codes that are currently displayed on the Caterpillar Monitoring System.
