Handling and Storage
Poor Handling and Storage procedures of Roller Followers can cause a great deal of damage and may prevent the parts from being used again. Typical handling and storage damage includes: rust, dents, nicks, and scratches. To avoid damage, parts should be handled carefully and never dropped or thrown. Place parts in racks designed to prevent the parts from contacting each other. Putting the parts in racks should prevent damage to any parts during transportation and cleaning.If a part will not be used immediately, coat the part with a rust preventative. Engine oil is an adequate rust preventative only if the parts will be used within a few days. If longer storage of parts is required, wrap individual parts in sealed containers, such as plastic bags.Cleaning Procedure
The roller followers can be cleaned using any good quality cleaning solution with a petroleum base. Diesel fuel works well because it provides some lubrication as well as cleaning. Cleaners, such as Stanisol, do not protect the parts and the parts must be coated with a rust preventative after cleaning. Kerosene is not as good as diesel fuel because it provides less lubrication than diesel.Make sure that the cleaning solution is clean since the clearances in roller followers are very close. If the cleaning solution is not kept clean, foreign material can get between the pin and the roller, thus causing damage or an early failure.Wear Limits
Maximum wear limits have been established to aid in determining the reusability of camshaft roller followers. Use the following information to determine if a roller follower can be used again.Check the movement of the roller on the lifter arm. If movement of the roller is greater that the value in Table 2, replace the lifter assembly.

These steps are for Visual Inspection of roller followers:1. Previously used roller followers can never be used with a new camshaft. Install used roller followers in their original position on the lifter shaft so that the follower rides on the same camshaft lobe it was originally mated to.2. New roller followers can be installed on a used camshaft if the camshaft does not have lobe wear that can be easily seen or felt. The original follower must have a normal pattern of smooth wear to be reused. If either the roller follower or the camshaft has experienced heavy wear, Caterpillar recommends installing a replacement camshaft and replacement followers.3.
