Remove the torque converter housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter Housing - Remove".Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform disassembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all times.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove bolts (1), cover (2), and the gasket.

Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring (3). Remove shaft (4). Remove gear (5), thrust bearing (6), and thrust race (7) .

Remove retaining ring (8) and seal (8A). Use Tooling (B) in order to remove needle bearing (9) .

Use Tooling (C) in order to remove needle bearing (10) .

Use two people in order to reposition torque converter housing (13). The weight of torque converter housing (13) is approximately 45 kg (100 lb). Remove bolts (11) from bearing housing (12) .
Use two people in order to reposition torque converter housing (13). Use suitable cribbing beneath bearing housing (12) (not shown) in order to protect bearing housing (12) (not shown) during Step 7.Note: Bearing housing (12) may be loose. This could cause bearing housing (12) to fall out of torque converter housing (13) during the repositioning.
If necessary, use Tooling (D) in order to remove bearing housing (12) (not shown) from torque converter housing (13) .

Remove gear (14), shim pack (15), and O-ring seal (16) from bearing housing (12) .

Remove lip seal (18) and bushing (17) from bearing housing (12) .
