Information:
Apply five (5) beads of 9U6076 Bluing to a newball stud.
Apply two (2) drops of penetrating oil to thenew ball stud. Spread the bluing evenly over the entire ball stud taper.
Insert the ball stud into the taper of the steeringbox immediately after applying the bluing. Mark the ball stud and steeringbox with two reference point 180 degrees apart.
Make sure the ball stud is properly seated. Usethe 4C3386 Spanner Wrench to rotate the ball stud one-half turn.
Loosen the ball stud by tapping on the bottomof the ball stud with a rubber mallet. Remove the ball stud.
Note: Remove the ball stud straight out ofthe bore. Do not twist the ball stud.
Visually check the contact area between the taperedbore and the ball stud. The bluing will transfer from ball stud to thetapered bore at the areas of contact.
Unacceptable contact area is less than 75%.
Determine the percentage of contact area withinthe tapered bore. The reconditioning process is intended to bring the taperedbore from this existing percentage to a minimum contact area of 75%.
Note: The contact area does not include the bottom5.0 mm (0.2 inch) of the bore, which is not tapered and therefore shouldnot show any signs of contact.
Thoroughly clean the bluing from the ball studand tapered bore.
Apply 2266624 Lapping Compound on the 2262378Lapping Tool. The lapping compound should be applied approximately 1.58mm (0.0625 in) thick.
Note: Do not attempt to use the ball studin place of the 2262378 Lapping Tool while completing the lapping procedure.The tapered portion of the lapping tool is designed to extend completelythrough the tapered bore. The tapered portion of the ball stud does notextend completely through the tapered bore. Thus, using a ball stud tocomplete the lapping procedure could create an unwanted ridge in the taperedbore. This ridge could prevent proper torque and pull down of the ballstud.
Place the 2262378 Lapping Tool in the taperedbore making sure that it is properly seated. Mark the lapping tool andsteering box stud with two reference points, 180 degrees apart.
Use the 4C3386 Spanner Wrench to turn the 2262378Lapping Tool. Turn the lapping tool twelve (12) rotations clockwise andthen twelve (12) rotations counter-clockwise. This is considered one lappingcycle.
Note: Apply a downward force while completingthe lapping procedure. Be sure the lapping tool remains properly seatedin the tapered bore while completing the lapping procedure.
Remove the lapping tool from the bore.
Thoroughly clean the bore in order to remove allof the lapping compound.
Place the clean ball stud into the clean taperedbore and measure Dimension A. Be sure the ball stud is properly seatedbefore measuring this dimension. If this dimension ever becomes less than3.5 mm throughout the lapping cycles, the steering box must be scrapped.
Note: If Dimension A is less than the minimumspecification (3.5 mm), the proper torque on the ball stud cannot be obtained.
Acceptable contact area is greater than 75%.
Inspect the surface texture (refer to taperedbore inspection section) and contact area (refer to Step 1 in tapered borereconditioning section).
If the surface finish meets the "F" specificationand the contact is greater than 75%, no further action is necessary.
