Brakes
Test for Proper Function
Make sure the area is clear of personnel and obstructions before testing the brakes.
The following tests are to determine if the service brake, secondary brake and parking brake are functional. These tests are not intended to measure maximum brake holding effort. Brake holding effort required to hold a machine at a specific engine rpm will vary from machine to machine due to differences in engine setting, power train efficiency, etc., as well as differences in brake holding ability.Engine rpm at beginning of machine movement, with service brake applied, should be compared against the engine rpm your specific machine was able to hold on a prior test, as an indication of system deterioration.Service Brakes
1. Start the engine. Let the air system build to 825 kPa (120 psi) operating pressure.2. Depress service brake (1) move transmission selector lever (2) to first range forward.3. Accelerate the engine to 1200 rpm.4. The machine should not move. If the machine moved, have repairs made.Secondary Brake
1. Start the engine. Let the air system build to 825 kPa (120 psi) operating pressure. Apply the secondary brake.2. Move the transmission selector lever to first range forward.3. Accelerate the engine to 1200 rpm.4. The machine should not move. If the machine moved, have repairs made.Parking Brake
1. Start the engine. Let the air system build to 825 kPa (120 psi) operating pressure.2. Apply the parking brake, move the transmission selector to first range forward.3. Accelerate the engine to 1200 rpm.4. The machine should not move. If the machine moved, have repairs made.
If the machine moved while testing the brakes, consult your Caterpillar dealer for brake inspection and repair. Make necessary repairs to the brakes before returning the machine to operation.
Air Dryer - If Equipped
Drain Moisture and Sediment
1. Drain moisture and sediment from engine governor control reservoir parking/secondary reservoir and service/retarder reservoirs.2. To drain reservoirs, open drain valves by lifting levers. Allow moisture and sediment to drain. Close valves by returning levers to the down position. 3. The desiccant cartridge should be rebuilt or replaced when it can no longer absorb water.4. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for repair kits and instructions.A small amount of moisture may be due to condensation in the system.Moisture may be present if an air dryer has been installed in a system that has been previously used without an air dryer. Several weeks may be needed to completely dry the system.Fan Adjusting Pulley
