Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Refer to Safety Section, "Before Starting Engine".Electric Starting
Note: For more information on engine operation, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7508, "3500B and 3500B High Displacement Generator Sets" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7509, "3508, 3512 and 3516 Engines".Note: At temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), a starting aid will improve startability. A jacket water heater or other means can be used to heat the engine.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the electric starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.Extended cranking at low oil pressure can activate the mechanical safety alarm. If the reset button is in the OFF position, push the button to reset the mechanical alarm control.
The crank cycle time is programmable. The total number of crank cycles are also programmable. The crank cycle time is the amount of time for engagement of the starting motor. The crank cycle time also determines the amount of time for cooling of the starting motor between crank cycles. The total number of crank cycles is the number of cycles that are performed. If the engine does not start within this number of cycles, electrical power to the Engine Control Module (ECM) will be disconnected. This disables the fuel injection system. The "OVERCRANK" indicator will illuminate when there is an overcrank. The "OVERCRANK" indicator is located on the instrument panel or the "OVERCRANK" indicator is located on the control panel.Automatic Starting
When the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode, the engine can start at any moment. To avoid personal injury, always remain clear of the the engine when the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode.
If the engine control switch is in the "AUTO" position, the engine will automatically start when the remote start/stop initiate contact closes. The engine will accelerate to rated rpm when the oil pressure is sufficient.Manual Starting
Perform all prestart checks.
Open the main electrical circuit breaker.
Illustration 1 g00319402
Engine control switch in the "Man. Start" position
Turn the ECS to the "Man. Start" position in order to start the engine. The ECM will allow the engine to be run at rated speed only when the oil pressure sensors indicate that there is sufficient pressure for the rated speed.
