PROBLEM
Certain Reman engines used in 776D, 777D, 793C, & D11R C/D can develop a head gasket leak, leading to combustion gases in the radiator. The combustion gases can result in hydro-locking of several cylinders and result in extensive damage to the engine.
ACTION REQUIRED
The following Reman engines have been identified as having the capability of exhibiting the faiure mode previously described.
The affected Reman engine serial numbers are: 5EL00384, 4ZL01330, 4ZL01331, 4ZL01334, BTR00404, 6FL00871, 6FL00873, 6FL00876, 5TL00939, CPW00911, CPW00917, CPW00924, CPW00928, CPW00929, BTB00155, BTB00156, 7CL01892, and 5XS00894.
If you have one or more of these engines in stock, an inspection is necessary in order to determine whether the engine requires returning. If the engine requires returning, please return to the distribution center listed below in the Parts Disposition.
Engines that are returned to Dealer Parts Stock after inspection will require two 061-9456 O-rings for reassembly.
Refer to the attached Rework Procedure for engine inspection details.
SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
Process "A" Finish:
1.5 hours and two 061-9456 O-rings will be allowed per engine, if the engine is determined to have Process "A" Finish and is returned to Dealer Parts Stock.
Process "B" Finish:
1.0 hour will be allowed per engine if the engine is determined to have Process "B" Finish and needs to be removed from dealer parts stock.
Submit one claim for each engine inspected whether returned to dealer parts stock or returned to the distribution center.

Rework Procedure
Refer to appropriate Service Manual as necessary.
1. Remove Bolts from oil manifold located on the right rear bank of the engine. Image1.1.1
2. Clean area with clean, dry towel.
3. Identify block as either a Process "A" finish or Process "B" finish by comparing the surface finish to those shown in Images1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4.
4. Engines identified as having a block with Process "A" Finish can be reassembled using two new 061-9456 O-rings, and returned to dealer parts stock.
5. Engines identified as having a block with Process "B" Finish need to be returned to the address listed in the Parts Disposition.
