Release the hydraulic system oil pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "System Pressure - Release".Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns.To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Position the master link of the track at the 2 o'clock position of the sprocket. The master link is equipped with a groove that is located around the outer perimeter of the pin. Lay a suitable block on the ground near the rear of the track guard. Move the machine backward so that the front of the tracks are forward of the suitable block. Slide the suitable block sideways into the path of the track. Drive the machine backward onto the suitable block. The suitable block should now be under the rear of the track guard and the master link of the track should be at the 2 o'clock position of the front idler, as shown.
Separate the track assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate".
Slowly position the track assembly onto the ground, as shown.

Install a suitable lifting device with Tooling (A) in order to remove final drive (1A), as shown.

Remove bolts (1) and remove cover (2). Use two people in order to remove the cover.

Disconnect hose assemblies (3), (4), (5), and (6) .

Remove two mounting bolts (7) that are located 180 degrees from each other. Install Tooling (B), as shown. Remove remaining bolts (7) that hold the final drive.

It may be necessary to install two of the mounting bolts into the pusher holes (8) in order to aid in removal of the final drive. Remove the final drive assembly. The weight of the final drive assembly and the travel motor
