Removal Procedure
Start By:
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".
Remove the rear tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove and Install".
Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Note: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent fluid loss. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
Drain the hydraulic oil from the oscillating axle housing and from the final drive assemblies. Place the oil in a suitable container for storage or for disposal. The capacity of the axle is 136 L (35.4 US gal).

Disconnect hydraulic hose assembly (1) from junction block (2) that is mounted on the rear axle.
Remove the tube assembly from the front trunnion and the rear trunnion.

Attach suitable lifting cables and a hoist to each final drive housing (3). Support the weight of the axle assembly with the hoists.

Remove four bolts (4), the nuts, and the washers from each side of the rear trunnion support.

Remove two bolts (5), the nuts, and the washers from each side of the front trunnion support.
Lower rear axle assembly (6) from the machine. The weight of the axle assembly is 3594 kg (7923 lb).
