New and earlier dipsticks.Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) Marking Procedure
Use this procedure to calibrate "Full Range" dipsticks used on 3406B Truck Engines. This procedure can be used for either 7C3236 Oil Pans (uses no spacer plate) or 7W5249 Oil Pans (with 9N3167 Spacer Plate). The sump capacity with either oil pan group is the same. The mounting flange dimension for the 7C3236 Oil Pan (uses no spacer plate) is the same as the total dimension of the flange for the 7W5249 Oil Pan and 9N3167 Spacer Plate. A convenient time to calibrate the dipstick is at the first oil change.
1. Park the truck on a level surface. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and shut off.2. Drain the oil and change the oil filter.3. Add 30.3 L (32 qt) of oil to the crankcase.4. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and shut off.5. Allow a minimum of 30 minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump.6. Check the oil level on the dipstick. The oil level should be at the "Add" mark. If it is not, mark the oil level on the dipstick. This is the correct "Add" mark.7. Add an additional 3.8 L (4qt) to the sump. After allowing a minimum of 30 minutes for the oil to drain into the sump, check the oil level. The oil level is at the location on the dipstick that should be marked as "Full".
