The cooling system venting is perhaps one of the more under appreciated components of the cooling system. Its job is to make certain the cooling system performance is not compromised by entrained air. Entrained air in the coolant flow can affect the cooling capability of the coolant.G3500 engines with water cooled valve seats (cross-flow cylinder heads) are particularly susceptible to mechanical issues due to trapped air in the cooling system. Extra care must be taken on these engines to ensure that best venting practices are followed.Refer to the venting section of the Application & Installation Guide, LEBW4978 , "Cooling Systems" for general information on venting best practices. The following illustrations help clarify venting locations and best practices specific to G3500H engines:Note: The customer installed lines shown are examples and the images do not include the required flex connections between the engine and customer installed lines.
Illustration 1 identifies required venting locations on engine for G3500H engines.
Illustrations 2 through 4 provide examples of appropriate locations for vent line connections on customer installed water lines. In general all local high points of customer installed water lines need to be vented. This venting is in addition to the on engine vent locations shown in Illustration 1.
Illustrations 5and 6 provide a generic schematic for the jacket water customer installed water lines and the SCAC customer installed water lines.
