Backlash Check with an Assembled Power Train
When testing and adjusting the transmission and power train, move the machine to an area clear of obstructions, with safe exhaust ventilation for the exhausts. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, do the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the transmission and power train.
Before you begin the test, refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".

Remove the drive shaft.

Remove yoke (1). Remove housing (2) .
Attach Tooling (B) to the splines on pinion shaft (3) .
Attach the magnetic base of Tooling (A) to the carrier.

Take three evenly spaced readings (approximately every 120 degrees) at Position (A) for the following machines: 120H and 135H.Note: If you take the readings at Position 2A divide each reading by two.
Take three evenly spaced readings (approximately every 120 degrees) at Position B for the following machines: 12H, 140H, 143H, 160H and 163H.Note: If you take the readings at Position (2B) divide each reading by two.
Refer to Table 2 for the backlash values.
If the backlash values are not within the acceptable tolerance, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Differential and Bevel Gear - Assemble" for the correct adjustment procedures.
