Remove the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned in order to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Remove bolts (2) and washers that secure planetary wheel end (3) to brake drum (1). Remove the planetary wheel end from the brake drum.

Remove the following items as an assembly from the axle housing:
Clip (7)
Gear (5)
Axle shaft (4)
Thrust washer (6)

Remove planetary ring gear (8) from brake drum (1) .

Remove two allen head screws (9) and remove lock (10) for the wheel bearing adjusting nut (11) .
Use Tool (A) in order to remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut.

Remove planetary ring gear hub (12) .

Remove three bolts (13) and the washers in order to remove dust shield (14) .

Caution must be observed when the brake drum is removed in order to prevent damage to the seal.
Install Tool (B) around the brake drum. Support brake drum (1) with a lifting device and remove the brake drum from the axle housing.

Remove bolts (15) that secure spider brake assembly (16) and the axle spindle to the axle housing.
Remove the spider brake assembly.Note: The removal of the brake shoes is not required in order to remove the spider brake assembly.

Remove nuts (17) that secure differential carrier (18) to the axle housing (21) .

Remove two bolts (19) from seal flange (20) in order to install Tool (C) to the differential carrier (18). Use a suitable lift in order to remove the differential carrier from the axle housing.

Mount the differential carrier assembly to Tool (D) .
Remove the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove".
