(10) Spring When there is high pressure within any equipment circuit, signal oil enters port (7) and the oil goes to passage (6). This pressure causes spool (9) to act against the force of spring (10). The spool shifts downward. This allows oil that is returning from the equipment circuit in chamber (4) to go around spool (9) and into passage (8). This passage connects to tank return port (2). Return oil now flows to the tank.Return Oil Restrictor (Closed Position)

(10) Spring The resolved signal at the work port is low. Since the signal is low, spring (10) pushes spool (9) upward. This restricts the return oil from going to passage (8) and back to the tank. Pressure now builds up inside return chamber (4). This is also felt in all of the valve sections. This back pressure forces oil through the makeup and relief valves into the work ports. Cavitation is prevented. The restrictor spool restricts flow to the tank and the spool forces the makeup valve to redirect the return oil to the work ports.
