Axle Inspection Procedure
Axle Inspection is extremely important. When operating machines in severe applications involving heavy loading and fast shuttle, the four 097-5261 Bolts in the final drive may loosen. Loose bolts cause inadequate clamping force. This may result in failures of the bolts, steering case, cardan shaft, and related parts in the axle.
Inspect the axles of the above machines for leaking oil seals and/or a metallic grinding noise. A leaking oil seal indicates the 097-5261 Bolts may be loose. These symptoms indicate a failure of the axle. Scheduled oil samples (S.O.S.) of the final drive do not appear to be a good indicator of an impending failure.
Preventative Maintenance Procedure
Machines with 097-5261 Bolts which are used in severe applications require additional maintenance during the 500 service hours or 6 months intervals. All 097-5261 Bolts should be tightened to a torque of 250 N m (184 lb ft). If the bolts are loose, this constitutes a failure. The axle should be rebuilt with the appropriate axle and u-joint kit.
When servicing or repairing one axle, always check the torque of the 097-5261 bolts in the other axle.Axle Identification Procedure
Several changes were made to the drive shaft assemblies and the final drive components on TH63, TH82 and TH83 Telehandlers to improve reliability and service life. Replacement axles and previous service repairs for RT80 and RT100 Telescopic Material Handlers may also include drive shaft assembly changes. Axle identification must be performed in order to determine the components inside the axle. Axle identification can be performed by using the Product Identification Number or the axle serial number. The axle serial number will better identify the particular axle.
See Chart 1 for the Improved Axle Effectivity using Product Identification Number.
Each axle can also be identified by a serial number located on top of the axle. The effectivity of the improved drive shaft assemblies are listed in Chart 2.
When checking axle serial numbers, prefix letters must be included. The first letter of the prefix (S) is the year of manufacture (1995). As an example, T-ITA-543500 is a later axle than S-ITA-545699.Axle Identification Using The Cardan Shaft
If the effectivity of the axle is in question, the axle maybe identified by the number of splines on the outboard end (short shaft). Improved cardan shaft are necessary to install improved axle kits.

Output end of cardan shaft (A).Effective with this change the output end (A) of the cardan shaft has 12 splines. See Illustration 1. Machines using the cardan drive shaft with 19 splines require 149-4096 Kit U-Joint. See Illustration 2 and Chart 3.
