C 395-1590 Lifting Eye Assembly 2
D 226-2380 Lift Bracket As 1 Start By:
Install the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove and Install".
Remove the starting motors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Starting Motor - Remove" or Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".
Remove the rocker shaft and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Remove".
If the exhaust elbow is attached to the flywheel housing, install the exhaust elbow and remove the bracket for the exhaust elbow. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Elbow - Remove and Install".
Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove".
Install the gas pressure regulator solenoid. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gas Pressure Regulator Solenoid - Remove and Install".
Install the crankshaft rear seal and the wear sleeve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal and Wear Sleeve - Install".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Inspect all O-rings, seals, and gaskets for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.
Use the timing pins to time the engine properly. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing". Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding the Top Center Position for the No. 1 Piston".
Illustration 1 g06223788
Remove two bolts (1) and bracket (2).
Illustration 2 g06262341
Remove six bolts (4)
Disconnect harnesses (3) and (6).
Illustration 3 g06262914
Remove one bolt (8) and timing pin (7).
Illustration 4 g06262927
If, the camshaft is out of time more than 18 degrees (approximately 1/2 of the timing pin is out of the groove), the valves can contact the pistons. Valve contact with the pistons will damage the engine. Refer to Test and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing"for more information.
Turn the camshaft until the timing pin (7) can be installed through the cylinder block at position (9) into groove (10) in the camshaft. It may be necessary to rotate past the bolt hole to relieve lash in the cam phaser gear, then rotate back to the hole.
Repeat steps 2 through 6 on the opposite side of the engine.
Illustration 5 g06262932
Remove solenoid (11).
Illustration 6 g06262937
Remove covers and tubes from both sides of the flywheel housing.
Remove two bolts (13) to remove tube (12).
Disconnect hose (16) and place out of the way.
Remove ten bolts (14) and remove covers (15).
Illustration 7 g06262942
Remove hub from both sides.
Remove three bolts (17), plate (18), and cam phaser hub (19).
Illustration 8 g06262944
Do not remove bolts (20) or set screw (21) from gear/cam phaser assembly (22). The spring is under high tension. Possible injury could occur if bolts are removed.
